Pain & emergency

Same-day emergency dental care where we can.

Toothache, broken tooth, lost filling, knocked-out tooth — call us. We keep room in the schedule for urgent care.

What we mean by emergency

A dental emergency is anything that's stopping you from eating, sleeping or thinking straight — or any injury that risks the long-term survival of a tooth. The most common cases we see:

  • Toothache that won't settle with over-the-counter pain relief
  • Broken tooth — chipped, cracked, or fractured down to the nerve
  • Lost filling or crown — especially if it's leaving sharp edges or exposed nerve
  • Knocked-out tooth (dental avulsion) — time-critical, see below
  • Dental abscess — swelling, throbbing pain, sometimes fever
  • Trauma to the mouth or jaw — sports, falls, accidents

If you're not sure whether it's an emergency, call us anyway. We'd rather have you in the chair than wait it out at home.

What to expect

  1. Step 1
Call us first. Tell us what's happening — pain level, when it started, any swelling or bleeding. We'll triage on the phone and aim to fit you in the same day where we can. Call (07) 3286 6914.
  2. Step 2
Come in. When you arrive, we'll examine the area, take any X-rays needed, and explain what we're seeing — including what's causing the pain or damage and what your options are.
  3. Step 3
Stabilise where we can. We aim to treat the urgent part of the problem at the same visit — drain an abscess, restore a fractured tooth, place a temporary crown, get pain under control.
  4. Step 4
Plan the full fix. If the underlying issue needs follow-up work (root canal, lab-made crown, extraction with replacement), we book those visits before you leave so there's no gap in care.

Knocked-out tooth — what to do right now

If a tooth has been completely knocked out (avulsion), the next 30 minutes matter.

  1. Don't scrub the tooth. Rinse it gently with milk or saline if it's dirty. Avoid touching the root.
  2. Keep it moist. Best option — slip it back into the socket if you can. Otherwise place it in a glass of milk, or in saliva inside the cheek (adult only).
  3. Call us immediately. We'll triage on the phone and tell you the fastest path in.

Reimplantation success rate is highest in the first 30 minutes and drops sharply after about 60 minutes — so the faster the tooth is back in place, the better the long-term outcome.

Common questions

Are you open after hours?

No, and we don't offer after-hours call-out. We're open until 7pm Monday to Thursday, and until 4pm Friday and Saturday. If you can't safely wait until we're open, go to your nearest hospital emergency department for acute pain or facial swelling, then call us when we're open for dental follow-up.

Will you actually see me today?

We aim to, and most days we can. We keep room in the schedule for urgent cases — call us early and we'll do our best. If we genuinely can't fit you in (rare), we'll triage on the phone and refer you to the best alternative.

How much will it cost?

It depends on what's needed. Once we've assessed the issue, we quote in full before we treat — including health-fund rebate and your gap. Payment plans are available for larger plans. See Payment options.

What if I just need pain relief tonight?

Call us on (07) 3286 6914 — if we're open we'll triage you in (we're here until 7pm Mon–Thu, 4pm Fri–Sat). Until you can get in, over-the-counter pain relief (paracetamol and/or ibuprofen, taken as directed) helps most dental pain, and a cold compress on the cheek can reduce swelling. Avoid putting aspirin directly on the gum — it burns the tissue. If we're closed and the pain is severe or you've got facial swelling, go to your nearest hospital emergency department.

Can a dental issue become a real emergency?

Yes. A dental abscess that's spreading — significant facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, fever above 38.5°C — needs urgent medical care. Go straight to a hospital emergency department, not a dental clinic.
