Cosmetic
Facial aesthetics, delivered in-clinic.
Facial aesthetics treatments to complement your smile, and clinical care for jaw muscle concerns linked to TMJ. Delivered by Dr Thao Doan; Dr Nikolas Suominen also qualified to provide treatment.
What we offer
Two related but distinct services, both delivered in-clinic at Oracare:
- Cosmetic facial aesthetics: consultation-led treatments to complement your smile, planned around your facial features as a whole. We approach these as complements to your smile, not replacements for it. What each treatment involves, and whether it suits you, is discussed at your consultation.
- Clinical jaw muscle care: for patients who clench or grind heavily (bruxism), or who have TMJ-related muscle pain, treatment to help the jaw muscles relax may be appropriate in selected cases. This is functional care rather than cosmetic treatment.
Who delivers it
Both services are delivered by Dr Thao Doan (founder and principal dentist, 20+ years clinical experience, advanced training in cosmetic and restorative dentistry). Dr Nikolas Suominen is also qualified to provide facial aesthetics treatment and works alongside Dr Thao as he progresses through his clinical development.
We don't outsource to a visiting provider. The same clinician who knows your dental history and bite is the one assessing, planning and delivering your treatment, which means aesthetic decisions are made with full awareness of your smile, your bite and your facial proportions.
What to expect
-
Step 1
Consultation. A full assessment of what you'd like to address, photographs for planning, and an honest conversation about what's achievable. If your goals don't match what these treatments can do, or if you'd benefit more from a different treatment, we'll tell you. No over-promising, no upselling.
-
Step 2
Treatment. Where treatment is appropriate and you'd like to proceed, it can often happen at the same visit as the consultation. Most appointments take 15 to 30 minutes depending on the treatment plan, comfort measures are available throughout, and we explain exactly what your treatment involves before anything begins.
-
Step 3
Review. We invite you back for a review after your first treatment so we can check how you're settling and fine-tune your plan if needed. This review is included in your care.
Common questions
What do facial aesthetics treatments involve?
It depends on what you'd like to address. Every treatment starts with a consultation: we assess your facial features, your smile and your goals, then talk through the options that suit you, including what each involves, how long it takes and what to expect afterwards. Australian advertising rules limit how much detail health services can publish about some treatments, so we keep the specifics for that conversation.
Will it hurt?
Most patients find treatment more comfortable than they expect. Comfort measures, including topical anaesthetic, are available where needed, and we talk you through each step as we go. Mild tenderness, bruising or swelling for a day or two afterwards is normal for some treatments; we'll explain what to expect for yours before we begin.
How long do results last?
It varies with the treatment, the area treated and the individual, so we'd rather not generalise here. At your consultation we'll give you an honest picture for your specific plan, including how often review or repeat treatment is typically needed. No outcome is guaranteed, and we won't over-promise.
Will it look natural?
That's our aim, and it's why we treat conservatively. We plan around your natural expression, and we'd rather start modestly and adjust at your review than overdo it. If you're after a more noticeable change, we'll discuss that openly at consultation.
Can it help my TMJ or jaw pain?
For selected patients, treatment that helps the jaw muscles relax may reduce clenching force and ease TMJ-related muscle pain. We assess this at consultation alongside your bite, any night-splint options, and broader TMJ care. Where this treatment is appropriate, it's usually part of a combined approach rather than a standalone fix.
Are there side effects?
All treatments carry some risk, and we'd rather you hear that plainly. The most common effects are temporary: mild bruising, swelling or redness in the treated area, and sometimes a brief headache. These usually settle within a few days. Less common but possible effects include asymmetry (one side responding more than the other, usually addressed at your review), temporary localised muscle weakness, and allergic reactions. We discuss the full risk profile and aftercare at your consultation before any treatment proceeds.
Who shouldn't have these treatments?
Facial aesthetics treatments are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for patients with certain neuromuscular conditions, where there is an active skin infection in the treatment area, or where there is a known allergy to something a treatment contains. We screen for all of this at consultation and won't proceed if there's any clinical concern.
Will my health fund cover it?
Most health funds classify cosmetic facial aesthetics treatments as cosmetic and don't rebate them. For clinical treatments such as TMJ-related jaw muscle care, some funds may rebate part under medical or dental cover; this depends on your fund and how the case is documented. We'll quote in full at consultation and check what your fund allows before treatment. See Payment options.
Cost & funding
HICAPS on the spot for any covered portion. Most extras policies don't rebate cosmetic facial aesthetics treatments. Clinical treatments (TMJ, bruxism) may be partially covered depending on your fund; we'll check what's available before treatment. Interest-free in-house payment plans are available for combined cosmetic plans. Full detail on Payment options.
