Cosmetic
Anti-wrinkle treatment and dermal fillers, delivered in-clinic.
Cosmetic injectables to complement your smile, and clinical muscle therapy for TMJ-related concerns. Delivered by Dr Thao Doan; Dr Nikolas Suominen also qualified to provide treatment.
What we offer
Two related but distinct services, both delivered in-clinic at Oracare:
- Cosmetic injectables — neuromodulator injections (commonly known as anti-wrinkle treatment) and dermal fillers, used to soften lines around the eyes, forehead and mouth, and to subtly restore volume where it suits your face. We approach these as complements to your smile, not replacements for it.
- Clinical muscle therapy — the same neuromodulator product, used to relax the powerful jaw muscles in patients who clench or grind heavily (bruxism), or who have TMJ-related muscle pain. This is functional treatment, not cosmetic — though many patients find the jawline softens visibly as a secondary effect.
Who delivers it
Both services are delivered by Dr Thao Doan (founder and principal dentist, 20+ years clinical experience, advanced training in cosmetic and restorative dentistry). Dr Nikolas Suominen is also qualified to provide neuromodulator treatment and works alongside Dr Thao as he progresses through his clinical development.
We don't outsource to a visiting injector. The same clinician who knows your dental history and bite is the one assessing, planning and delivering the injectables — which means cosmetic decisions are made with full awareness of your smile, your bite and your facial proportions.
What to expect
-
Step 1
Consultation. A full assessment of what you'd like to address, photographs for planning, and an honest conversation about what's achievable. If your goals don't match what injectables can do — or if you'd benefit more from a different treatment — we'll tell you. No over-promising, no upselling.
-
Step 2
Treatment. For most cosmetic cases, treatment happens at the same visit as the consultation if you'd like to proceed. Treatment takes 15–30 minutes depending on the number of areas. We use fine needles and topical anaesthetic where needed; most patients describe the sensation as a brief pinch.
-
Step 3
Review. Results from neuromodulator injections develop over 7–14 days; dermal fillers are visible immediately. We invite you back for a 2-week review on your first treatment so we can fine-tune dosing — this is included.
Common questions
What's the difference between anti-wrinkle treatment and dermal fillers?
Anti-wrinkle injections (neuromodulators — sometimes colloquially called Botox after the original brand) relax specific muscles by temporarily reducing nerve signals to them. They soften the lines that form when those muscles contract — forehead lines, frown lines between the eyebrows, crow's feet around the eyes. Results develop over 7–14 days and last about 3–4 months.
Dermal fillers add volume directly to soft tissue. They smooth lines that exist at rest, restore volume to cheeks or lips, and shape facial contours. Results are visible immediately and last 6–18 months depending on the product and area.
We use both, sometimes together, depending on what you're trying to achieve.
Will it hurt?
Neuromodulator injections use very fine needles — most patients describe each injection as a brief pinch. Topical anaesthetic is available if you prefer. Dermal fillers can be slightly more uncomfortable because the volume is larger; we use anaesthetic cream and the filler itself contains a local anaesthetic. Mild bruising or swelling for 1–2 days is normal.
How long do results last?
Neuromodulators typically last 3–4 months before re-treatment is needed. With regular re-treatment, some patients find the duration extends over time as the muscles adapt. Dermal fillers last 6–18 months depending on the product type and area treated — softer products in the lips dissolve faster; firmer products in the cheeks last longer.
Will it look obvious or "frozen"?
Not when it's done conservatively. We dose for natural movement — your face still expresses normally; the lines just soften. The "frozen" look comes from over-dosing or treating too many areas; we'd rather under-dose at your first visit and top up at the 2-week review than overshoot. If you specifically want a more dramatic result, we'll discuss that openly at consultation.
Can it help my TMJ or jaw pain?
Neuromodulator injections into the masseter (jaw) muscles can significantly reduce clenching force and ease TMJ-related muscle pain in selected patients. We assess this at consultation alongside your bite, any night-splint options, and broader TMJ care. Where injectables are appropriate, they're often used as part of a combined approach rather than relying on injectables alone.
Are there side effects?
The most common side effects are temporary — mild bruising, swelling, redness at the injection site, sometimes a brief headache. These usually settle within a few days. Less common but possible side effects include asymmetry (one side responds more than the other — usually addressed at the 2-week review), localised muscle weakness or drooping, and allergic reactions. We discuss the full risk profile and aftercare at your consultation before any treatment proceeds.
Who shouldn't have these treatments?
Neuromodulator and dermal filler treatments are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for patients with certain neuromuscular conditions, active skin infections at the injection site, or known allergies to product components. We screen for all of this at consultation and won't proceed if there's any clinical concern.
Will my health fund cover it?
Most health funds classify cosmetic injectables as cosmetic and don't rebate them. For clinical-indication treatments — TMJ-related muscle therapy, bruxism management — some funds may rebate part under medical or dental cover; this depends on your fund and how the case is documented. We'll quote in full at consultation and check what your fund allows before treatment. See Payment options.
Cost & funding
HICAPS on the spot for any covered portion. Most extras policies don't rebate cosmetic injectables. Clinical-indication treatments (TMJ, bruxism) may be partially covered depending on your fund — we'll check what's available before treatment. Interest-free in-house payment plans are available for combined cosmetic plans. Full detail on Payment options.
